1. Defining Boys Problems in schooling using a Feminist Perspective: Huh?
Jan 16 2012, 7:13 PM EST
Two articles in Issue #1, 2012 of Educational Review insist on defining the problems/barriers for boys now being identified in education by using a feminist perspective. The authors suggest that the problems of declining male achievement cannot be addressed by having more male teachers or by creating single sex classes or schools. Instead, the focus should continue to be on male hegemony. Seems like a bit of an oxymoron to this observer...can't we ever discuss gender equity issues from a male perspective? Jan 20 2012, 5:54 PM EST
Schools are often the target of criticism for not involving youth in decision-making desoite the fact that health, welfare and other systems do not have the same youth invovement structures or extent of consultations through student councils, youth appointed to school boards and more. the Children and Families’ Involvement in Social Work Decision Making is examined in this article from the January 2012 issue of Children and Society. 5. Seeking a new characterisation of learning disorders
Jan 23 2012, 9:40 AM EST
The editorial in the January 2012 issue of Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry discusses the tension between educators and psychiatrists in the labeling and treatment of specific disorders that interfere with learning. For many years, educationists, dissatisfied with the medical model, have disputed the use of diagnostic categories. Rather than ‘dyslexia’, ‘ADHD’ or ‘Specific language impairment (SLI)’, terms such as literacy difficulties, problems of attention, and speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) abound in our schools. A similar tension between categorical and dimensional disorders has been at the forefront in the development of DSM-5, and is a recurrent theme in several articles in this issue. Together these articles highlight the need for a broader perspective that recognizes continuities and co-morbidities between children’s learning disorders. 6. No Evidence Supporting PSA's to Eliminate Mental Health Stigma
Jan 23 2012, 10:04 AM EST
An article in the January 2012 issue of Psychiatric Services questions the value of public service announcements to reduce stigma about mental health. He suggests targeting specific sub-populations and local groups. He concludes that Reports of government contractors suggest that PSAs have some effect as measured by population penetration, but such data provide no meaningful evidence about the impact of PSAs, such as real-world change in prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behaviors.
