SCREEN TIME REDUCTION : MOST EFFICIENT APPROACH TO PREVENT OBESITY
Jan 9 2012, 1:47 PM EST
Mobilization of parents and children to prevent obesity is a major challenge for society. Since the creation of the SMART program by «Stanford Health Promotion Resource Center» in 1998, various forms of the program have given positive results in Michigan, Quebec, Ontario, France. Students attending schools experiencing the SMART program were basically (1) informed of documented impacts of screen exposure and (2) offered to replace screen time exposure with other preferred activities. To build momentum and gain support from parents and communities, organizing committees were formed to MOTIVATE students and EMPOWER them to win a new game: surviving 10 days with zero hours of screen exposure. The zero screen exposure period was followed by 7 hours/week screen consumption diet. Major benefits from the SMART program (U.S.) and the 10 Day Screen Free Challenge (Canadian version of SMART) include: decrease of BMI, triceps skinfold thickness, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio, children spending more time with parents, better communication within family, better school work, better attention in class, better sleep, more time for sport and physical activity, more time for reading, less disputes at home & at school, more time with friends, better mood of students in class and at recess, less tobacco & alcohol consumption, etc. Presentation will allow participants to learn how to organize their communities & schools, how to get material to train teachers, children, teens and parents.
